If any of you have been in touch with the news lately, you’ve heard about the bill that allows for racial profiling. More recent though, was the bill that bans ethnic studies programs. From what I read about them, they’re classes that focus on a certain culture? Like Native American studies, or Mexican studies? From an article from FoxNews, The new bill would make it illegal for a school district to teach any courses that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment of a particular race or class of people, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”
and this said by Tom Horne, the State Superintendent for Public Instruction:
"Traditionally, the American public school system has brought together students from different backgrounds and taught them to be Americans and to treat each other as individuals, and not on the basis of their ethnic backgrounds,"
I didn’t know that teaching about a specific ethnic group took away from a person’s individuality. If anything, learning about your past, your ancestors, strengthens your own self. I also didn’t know the point of public school was to assimilate kids to me more American. I thought it was to learn.
The point of the law Arizona passed was to make sure Mexicans wouldn’t try to get any ideas about taking over the southwestern parts of the United States. What gets me though, is that schools can still teach Native American studies(because of a federal law). Even if Indian studies weren’t a federal law, I bet Arizona wouldn’t worry about having the Indians overpower them because the people running it seem like the type of people who wouldn’t feel the worry about us trying to take over because America has already taken over; kicked us and threw us in reservations; tried to assimilate us. If anything, I believe that in that sense, Americans are hypocrites(as are everyone, but that’s a different topic altogether) If Brewer and Co. think Mexicans will try to take over, do they not realize they are Americans, and Americans have taken this land from someone else who lived here long before them? The colonists were greedy thieves.
It makes me so mad. I hate what Arizona is turning into. We’re a beautiful state(the only state with saguaro cacti) but it seems like we’re being controlled by a bunch of racist, white supremacists. And this hasn’t happened before. Arizona use to hold some of the many concentration camps for Japanese(or Japanese looking people) during the WWII era. History tends to repeat itself and I wouldn’t be surprised if they starts forcing the Mexicans into concentration camps of their own. And then what? Genocide? It honestly would not surprise me with everything that’s going on.
Another thing, they’ve also passed a law banning teachers with thick accents(like thick Mexican accents) from teaching classes where students are learning English. But what really constitutes as an English learning class? They’re being very vague with it and it’s ridiculous. English is a hard enough language to learn, be glad that there are people who learned a whole new language and went on to teach kids! They could have stuck with Spanish only, and ran taco stands or worked at Wal*Mart but no; they’ve decided to educate kids. Teaching is one of the greatest careers out there and I don’t think they get nearly as much credit or thanks for their work. I just hope that when I become a teacher that things have improved.
This whole topic makes me so mad. I’m really hoping Obama can find a way to repeal it all like he says he’s trying to do. I’ve kind of lost faith in Obama saving the United States from self destruction but if he can repeal the law my views might change.
And another thing since I’m venting; Schools everywhere(at least in Arizona) are in financial difficulty. Sports funds have been cut, everyone has to raise their own money for buses and competitions, even band! But I got to thinking today, a bunch of classes like science and math classes, have Promethean boards, these electronic, interactive whiteboards. They’re really cool but they cost thousands of dollars. My math class has one, and we even have a set of 30 remotes for multiple choice quizzes(or something, we haven’t used them yet) that cost about 30 bucks a piece, if not more. Recently, my teacher got a slate that he can write on that controls the whiteboard. He said it costs 600 dollars. All schools in Arizona got these red buckets for peeing in encase of a major lock. Recently all the classrooms at my school got brand new phones too.
My question is, if we’re in such a financial difficulty as to where schools can’t pay for sports and teachers have to use their own pocket money to purchase paper and other necessary supplies, then why are schools buying all these unnecessary items? I mean, seriously, if there’s a major lock down, I think people have more important problems than going pee. I don’t understand. It’s all so ridiculous.
I need to stop now before I get any more frustrated.
and even if it’s hard sometimes with these ridiculous times,
p.s. If you noticed I used “us” when talking about Native Americans. Now I don’t look it, but I’m in fact 1/4 Indian(I hate it when people say, oh yeah, I’m 1/11 Cherokee. Seriously? Shut up.). It might not seem like much, but it’s a good size; it’s enough to have the tribe send me money in a trust fund. haha. So anyway, my mother’s adopted so she doesn’t know what she is(besides white), and when my dad was around, he never talked about his white side, so the emotionally, the only thing I have to hold on to is this quarter of Comanche blood that runs through me. It’s like a secret pride I hold in myself.
